APPLIANCE FAULT & SAFETY GUIDE

Combustion and flame appearance

An occasional orange flash can reflect particles in the cooking environment, but a persistently yellow, lazy or sooting gas flame warrants attention. Flame appearance is one observation, not a complete combustion test. The risk is greater when soot appears on pans, nearby surfaces or the appliance itself, or when people experience symptoms such as headaches in a poorly ventilated room.

What an abnormal flame may signal

Insufficient air mixing, burner contamination, incompatible burner parts or incorrect supply conditions can influence combustion. A photograph may help explain the appearance, but it cannot measure the gases produced or confirm safe operation. A yellow flame accompanied by odour, smoke or soot should not be treated as a reason to increase gas pressure at the regulator.

Why soot deserves serious attention

Black deposits indicate that combustion conditions require investigation. Soot can accumulate on cookware and near the appliance, but the more important concern is the possibility of unsafe combustion products. A qualified practitioner should check relevant appliance and ventilation conditions using appropriate procedures. A gas oven or gas heater showing similar symptoms also requires appliance-specific assessment.

Immediate safe actions

Stop using the affected appliance and ensure everyone is safe. If a gas leak is suspected, leave the affected area without operating electrical switches or flames, and contact emergency services or the gas supplier from a safe place. Never test for leaks with a flame, dismantle burners connected to the gas train or make unqualified adjustments to regulators.

Information to give the technician

Describe whether one burner or every ring changes colour, whether the flames remain abnormal with normal cookware removed and whether the change followed servicing or installation. Note any soot or unusual odour. Professional checks should determine the cause and verify that operation is safe before the appliance returns to service.

When the kitchen environment is relevant

Combustion does not occur in isolation from the kitchen. Nearby extractors, enclosed cabinets and inadequate combustion air may influence appliance operation, depending on the unit. The presence of a cooker hood does not prove that the gas burner is receiving suitable air or operating safely. Report if soot appears only when a particular extraction fan runs, after a kitchen alteration or on a specific burner. This helps a professional investigate the whole operating environment without encouraging unsafe home experiments with gas flow.

After the appliance has been assessed

A safe return to service should be supported by the practitioner’s findings, any approved component work and relevant functional checks. Ask whether the condition came from a burner component, gas supply, ventilation or another installation issue. Do not rely on how blue the flame looks in a photograph as a certificate of safe combustion. If symptoms such as dizziness or headache occur during use, move to fresh air and seek medical or emergency assistance as appropriate, even if no obvious leak odour is present.

Questions about this service

Is a little orange flame always dangerous?

Brief colour changes can occur, but persistent yellow flames, soot or odour need professional assessment.

Can I adjust the regulator to make the flame blue?

No. Pressure and gas-side adjustments are for appropriately qualified practitioners following appliance specifications.

Does a clean burner guarantee safety?

No. Visible cleanliness does not verify combustion quality, ventilation or the condition of the gas installation.
