APPLIANCE FAULT & SAFETY GUIDE

Water flow and heater capacity

Water that starts warm and turns cold halfway through a shower is frustrating, but it does not automatically mean that the gas burner is defective. Instantaneous gas water heaters respond to water flow and temperature demand. A changing flow rate, mixing valve, demand from another tap or an internal lockout can produce similar experiences from the user’s perspective.

Compare different fixtures

If only one shower cycles between hot and cold, the shower mixer may be changing the flow that activates the heater. If multiple outlets show the same pattern, the assessment turns more directly towards the heater and the property’s water supply. Record whether the water changes immediately or only after several minutes; that timing often provides more useful detail than the word “intermittent”.

Check capacity without guessing

Some complaints begin only when a second bathroom is in use. An instantaneous unit has a rated flow and temperature-rise capability, so increased demand may exceed what it can deliver. A larger system may or may not be required. A specialist needs model and usage information before proposing replacement, and cannot resolve a genuine control fault simply by upsizing the heater.

Consider heater protection and lockouts

A unit that stops heating and shows an error code may be responding to excessive temperature, flame sensing or another protected condition. Do not bypass or repeatedly reset safety systems. Photograph the display only if safely accessible and describe whether the unit is outdoors, enclosed or installed with a flue. Ventilation or exhaust problems warrant prompt qualified attention.

What to record before arranging service

Mention the geyser brand and model, the affected bathrooms, the approximate time until water cools and any recent plumbing work. Explain if hot water returns when another tap is closed. This information helps distinguish mixer, flow and heater causes. A repair quotation should follow appropriate diagnosis rather than being based only on intermittent temperature.

Recognise the effect of cold water mixing

Many households adjust shower temperature by mixing cold water into the hot stream. On some instantaneous systems, the reduced hot-water draw can approach the minimum activation flow and cause cycling. This is not a recommendation to change household plumbing yourself; it is context for explaining the symptoms. Tell the technician if cycling gets worse when the shower mixer is moved to a cooler position or if other taps show no issue, so the assessment can follow the correct path.

When a stop in heating is protective

A unit may stop heating because a safety limit is reached or a sensor reports an unacceptable condition. That shutdown is not a nuisance feature to override. If there is an error code, photograph the external display when safe. If there is exhaust odour, visible soot or evidence of abnormal combustion, discontinue use and seek qualified help. A contractor should be able to explain whether they found a flow problem, an inadequate system capacity or a defect within the heater itself.

Questions about this service

Why does the geyser work in the kitchen but not the shower?

Shower flow and mixing can affect activation, though other causes remain possible.

Is the heater too small for two bathrooms?

Possibly, but only a model-specific capacity and flow assessment can establish that.

Can I increase gas pressure to stop cycling?

No. Gas pressure adjustments are regulated safety work and not a DIY remedy.
